When I first met Zoe, she came out of the kennel happy to lick my face and be hugged and petted.  She was anxious to go outside and be away from the shelter.  When we got to the exercise area, it occurred to her that she was still incarcerated and she focused on staring off into space, no doubt wishing her owner would come retrieve her.  She wasn't interested in playing and she was polite and I was able to put my hands all over her, but she made it clear I wasn't her owner.  As I went to pick up her feet, she became whiney.  I stopped.  I got the impression, Zoe was a 'Princess'.  When we returned her to the kennel, she became actively engaging in an effort to not go back to the kennel, but went in willingly.  We took a look at her surrender sheet and I was surprised to see that she knew how to 'give paw' and she knew basic commands.  The shelter worker told her to 'Sit' and she did, she asked for her 'Paw' and she complied.  No whining...confirming, she is a Princess.

Zoe was an owner surrender and given up because she 'became too big'.  She is on the small side for an Akita and I'm sure had obtained her adult weight at least a year before.  She was used to a working home, lived with a woman and her 17 year old daughter.  She is totally housebroken.  She was a house pet and not crated.  She had a penchant for burying food in the couch and purportedly didn't like to be disciplined.  Her previous owner had a 6' fenced yard, she was happy to prowl about that.  She didn't live with other animals.

While we haven't located a foster home for Zoe yet, she has adjusted to being kenneled and is happy to see everyone.  Still full of kisses and wiggly.  If she responds to the other dogs, it hasn't been an issue, I suspect it has become more her routine to visit with the other dogs while she has her time out in the paddock.  Zoe has been introduced to children as young as 9 years of age, but due to her 'self awareness' issues, we would feel more comfortable that Zoe go to a home with older teens or adults.  If we get more information on her relationship with other dogs, we will update it, but currently, she should probably go to a home as an only dog.  She was tested by the shelter and did not exhibit any resource guarding behavior.  I think she ignored the helper dog and cats (walked through the cat room), but again, if a dog is stressed they rarely misbehave.  She may decide in her own home, she wants it to be her own home.
