THIS ANIMAL IS BEING COURTESY POSTED FOR ANOTHER ORGANIZATION. PLEASE SEE CONTACT INFORMATION ABOVE FOR FOR DETAILS AND LOCATION.  YUKON NEEDS A FOSTER HOME OR PERMANENT HOME IN THE USA.

I was contacted by Lynda Carlson ( ericdcarlson@bellsouth.net )who works with the shelter in the Grand Bahamas, trying to find homes for dogs.  Their 200 dog shelter is caring for over 400 dogs.  By all logic, Yukon should have been euthanized by now. They have held onto Yukon because he is such a nice boy and favorite of the staff.  below is the info on him.  If anyone has a foster for him or can help him, Lynda will put them in contact with the shelter in the Bahamas.

"Yukon came into the old shelter around 2006.  I cannot remember his story but he was about 1-2 yrs old then.  He was adopted in mid 2007 and the dumbass people left him out in the yard two days later (he was supposed to be a house dog) and he promptly climbed the fence and disappeared.  We looked for him for the longest to no avail.

In Dec of 08 we set a trap at the request of a lady who said a black and white pit bull was hanging around her yard.  When the boys brought the trap and dog back her to the shelter I could not believe my eyes, it was Yukon!  Very skinny, missing half his hair but it was him and he recognized those of us he knew from the old shelter.

So - he is 6 or 7 yrs old and weighs 66 lbs.

He is very gentle.  Good with other dogs.  Shy with new people, even with his favorite people he's not an exuberant dog.  He is a bit aloof and independent. Needs a patient quiet person to help him build confidence and who will understand he may never be a lovebug kind of dog.

how he is with children that one is hard for us to evaluate not having any small kids in the shelter.  We do have young teen volunteers so he has seen them but probably not had much interaction, we don't let them walk the bigger dogs usually,

cats  well we took him in to our cattery and he was exposed to 90+ cats all at once!!  We did let him stand in the doorway for a few minutes first and walk further in gradually. (With metal screens between them of course)  His posture was relaxed as it was outside, he had no adverse initial reaction, he was more curious than anything.  One cat in particular was not happy at seeing him and was quite vocal about it, he really had no reaction to that at all.  At one point the many cats in the biggest colony room all ran to the other side of the room (towards their food source!), away from him, and it got his attention, maybe heightened curiosity but no prey drive signs.  He got nose to nose with a smaller kitten through a metal screen door and was very interested (his ears had perked up a bit) but when Beth touched him, he relaxed and dropped his ears. Having said that would I put him right in a home with a cat or other small animal, of course not but he is definitely not what I'd call cat aggressive.  Like any dog, if a cat ran right in front of him would he try to stop it?  Maybe, maybe not.

Resource gaurding.  He does not resource guard food. he and his kennelmate eat together with no issues, in fact can even have chewy treats at the same time together with no issues.  People can take food away from him with no trouble. He loves his main caregiver but is not overly possessive of her, and others (dogs and people) can approach her with no problem.  He is not overly possessive of his kennelmate either (a large female mixed breed).  When the dogs in his kennel block start barking when people come through, he will engage in that somewhat but not frenetically, just a little barking and then he stops.

Is he with other dogs now?? I'm assuming yes, because of your space issues.  Yes see above, also he is good on the exercise field in fairly large groups of dogs.  Only one dog has ever annoyed him - that dog challenged him every time Yukon passed his kennel and when they were loose together challenged him again - Yukon reacted back but staff got there before anything happened so don't know how far he would have gone.  He can pass by all the kennels and even when the dogs bark at him he just ignores them.  He is good on a lead, but he also walks off lead with his caregiver and stays close to her, and comes on command for her.  He is very clean in his kennel, does not pee or poop in it - housetraining should be pretty easy, only he likes to pee on everything outside, trees, walls, you name it.  :-)

He really has only seen Beth very occasionally and does not know her well at all, but he was quite fine with her immediately and in fact he jumped up on her right away (our staff like for the dogs to give them "hugs" and encourage this, so sorry as i know it's not so desirable with a 70 lb dog but I don't have the heart to make them stop).  He went with Beth willingly all over the grounds, into the cattery, into the office and was relaxed and even leaning into her.  She was able to check his teeth, handle his feet, his ears etc, no problems.  I had the medical tech come take blood to do another heartworm test (last one was over two years ago) and he was fine with that(he is HW neg and slightly pos for ehrlichia, we have him on doxycycline)  He is ok with being bathed, but a little nervous of the hose.  "

Yukon found a foster home in NC and is now in the US and will be adopted under ARMAC.

1-17-12  After a flight from the Bahamas to St. Augustine, and then another to Raleigh/Durham, Yukon was released from his crate and walked.  He let his new foster dad, totally unknown to him, pick him up and put him in a crate in the vehicle.  He is now acclimating to a whole new world.  He sleeps in their bedroom at night, has met and is okay with their 4 yr old daughter, and their female Rhodesian.  He is still a little uncertain but adjusting well..
